A Connectionist Architecture with Inherent Systematicity0

چکیده
For connectionistnetworks to be adequate for higher level cognitive activities such as natural language interpretation, they have to generalize in a way that is appropriate given the regularities of the domain. Fodor and Pylyshyn (1988) identified an important pattern of regularities in such domains, which they called systematicity. Several attempts have been made to show that connectionist networks can generalize in accordance with these regularities, but not to the satisfaction of the critics. To address this challenge, this paper starts by establishing the implications of systematicity for connectionist solutions to the variable binding problem. Based on the work of Hadley (1994a), we argue that the network must generalize information it learns in one variable binding to other variable bindings. We then show that temporal synchrony variable binding (Shastri and Ajjanagadde, 1993) inherently generalizes in this way. Thereby we show that temporal synchronyvariable binding is a connectionist architecture that accounts for systematicity. This is an important step in showing that connectionism can be an adequate architecture for higher level cognition.

متن کاملSemantic systematicity and context in connectionist networks
Fodor and Pylyshyn argued that connectionist models could not be used to exhibit and explain a phenomenon that they termed systematicity, and which they explained by possession of compositional syntax and semantics for mental representations and structure sensitivity of mental processes. This inability of connectionist models, they argued, was particularly serious since it meant that these mode...

متن کاملThe Connectionist Scientist Game: Rule Extraction and Refinement in a Neural Network
Scientific induction involves an iterative process of hypothesis formulation, testing, and refinement. People in ordinary life appear to undertake a similar process in explaining their world. We believe that it is instructive to study rule induction in connectionist systems from a similar perspective. We propose an approach, called the Connectionist Scientist Game, in which symbolic condition a...

This paper describes a general architecture SCAN for hybrid symbolic connectionist processing of natural language phrases. SCAN's architecture shows how learned connectionist domain-dependent semantic representations can be combined with encoded symbolic syntactic representations. Within this general architecture we focus on a connectionist model for semantic classiication based on a scanning u...
